Numbers 11:2 NLT
“Then the people screamed to Moses for help, and when he prayed to the LORD, the fire stopped.”
Screamed to Moses for help
After doing wrong, a repentant heart seeks to make amends, perhaps by saying, “I’m sorry,” and taking steps to repair the harm. In the scripture referenced here, when the consequences of the people’s actions against God became clear, they did not apologize or express repentance; instead, they cried out to Moses for help. Seeking help in the face of serious consequences is not wrong, but it should come from a repentant heart—a response that was absent in this case.
Another lesson is that the people cried out to Moses because they believed he could speak to God on their behalf. His relationship with God must have been evident to them for them to turn to him. Friend, does the way others perceive your relationship with God reflect what it truly is?
A further lesson emerges from Moses’s response. He did not rebuke the people; Scripture says he prayed to the Lord, and because of his close relationship with Him, the fire stopped. Moses could have urged the people to pour water on the fire, but instead he called on God, who has authority over it. Friends, never underestimate the power of prayer, especially when offered humbly by someone with a pure heart and clean hands.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, please forgive me for every wrong I have committed against You, whether in my thoughts, words, or actions, and help me turn away from them. For Jesus’ sake, and through the mercy made possible by His shed blood, please have mercy on me and guide me in Your ways. Amen.
