Intentionally guard your heart
In Leviticus 4, the Lord provides detailed instructions for atoning for sins among different groups—priests, the entire community of Israel, leaders, and individual members. While each situation requires specific animals as sacrifices, the types differ. For tribal leaders, the Lord specifically commands a blemish-free male goat as a sin offering. Biblical scholars point out that at that time, a male goat was more expensive than a female. Therefore, Ahira’s decision to bring a male goat—and not substitute it with a female—shows his willingness to follow the Lord’s standards wholeheartedly. Knowing that the mind is desperately wicked, Ahira could have manipulated the situation and switched identities for convenience. In one instance, he could see himself as a tribal leader when the cost was manageable; in another, he would shift to being a community member to avoid the costly sin-offering requirement. Ahira never did this, nor did other tribal leaders, meaning he met the Lord’s expectations regarding the sin offering, which wouldn’t have been possible if he hadn’t guarded his heart above all else in this regard. Friends, to meet the Lord’s expectations, you must intentionally guard your heart with the help of the Holy Spirit.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, I pray that I will not, due to fear, hypocrisy, or weakness, become a double-faced person who hides their true self. Please help me to live up to the expectations you have set for me, including integrity, honesty, and consistency in my words and actions. In Jesus’s name, Amen.
