Numbers 7:8 NLT
“and he gave four wagons and eight oxen to the Merarite division for their work. All their work was done under the leadership of Ithamar son of Aaron the priest.”
To the Merarite division
As simple as the distribution of the gifts brought by the tribal leaders may have seemed, the process could have confused anyone. However, Moses didn’t experience any confusion for several reasons. First, Moses did not subject the distribution to public opinion or popular consensus, maintaining his focus on divine guidance. Second, and more importantly, he stood firmly on God’s unchangeable word, which is Yes and Amen, trusting in its authority. Friends, popular opinion isn’t the way to do God’s business, but total reliance on His word.
Before any gifts were provided, God had informed Moses how each division should carry out their task, and he didn’t change it because of these gifts. If Moses had not fully internalized God’s directives, he might have divided the wagons and oxen equally among the Gershonite, Merarite, and Kohathite divisions of the Levites, which could have led to conflict with God’s specific instructions, particularly for the Kohathite division. Instead, he allocated resources accordingly, giving the Gersonite and Merarite divisions only what was appropriate for their assignments. In fact, he granted the Merarite division more wagons and oxen than the Gersonite, since their tasks required greater resources and mobility.
Lastly, God entrusted Moses with the responsibility to distribute these gifts without detailing how he should do so or whom to assign more to, and Moses faithfully executed this trust, relying on what God initially told him. Friends, circumstances may change, but God’s instructions remain the same. Therefore, don’t alter God’s instructions to suit situations; instead, adapt situations to align with God’s word, as Moses did.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, please help me to remain steadfast in Your truth, ensuring I do not compromise Your word to suit my changing circumstances. At the same time, grant me wisdom to adapt my situations in a way that aligns fully with Your divine instructions. In Jesus’s name, Amen.
