Strong Tower: A Daily Scripture Reflection

Numbers 11:1 NLT
“Soon the people began to complain about their hardship, and the LORD heard everything they said. Then the LORD’s anger blazed against them, and he sent a fire to rage among them, and he destroyed some of the people in the outskirts of the camp.”
He sent fire
One thing is clear: you cannot send anyone or anything to carry out a task unless you have authority over it. In the scripture referenced here, fire acted on God’s behalf. God did not plead with it or promise it anything in return. The I AM WHO I AM sent it because He created it and had authority over it. Notice that the element did not delay or resist the instruction; it promptly carried it out. Friends, do you act on God’s instructions, or do you approach them casually and without commitment?
Another lesson lies in the indefinite article used with “fire.” The scripture says God sent “a fire,” which may suggest that different forms of fire exist within God’s domain. Yet the fire needed for this particular assignment was available and ready. Notice, too, that when the action was carried out, no one said, “It was a fire,” but rather, “God.” In other words, whenever you perform a task for the Lord, do not take His glory for yourself.
Finally, the resulting devastation spared those within the camp, but not everyone on its outskirts. Friends, where are you, and what are you doing there?
Prayer
Heavenly Father, wherever I find myself, keep me from joining the ungodly or encouraging anyone to turn away from Your ways. In Jesus’s name, Amen.
