Numbers 11:5 NLT
“We remember the fish we used to eat for free in Egypt. And we had all the cucumbers, melons, leeks, onions, and garlic we wanted.”
Of all things
It is often said that what matters most to a person becomes their driving force. Yet even a powerful motivation can lead us astray if it is rooted in something of little lasting value. Despite the hardships the Israelites endured in Egypt, they remembered the food they had eaten there. The scripture shows that this longing wasn’t limited to a few individuals; it spread throughout the community. They seemed unmoved by how God had delivered them from Egypt and carried them so far. Instead of focusing on the land flowing with milk and honey that God had promised to give them as a lasting inheritance, they longed for the fish, cucumbers, melons, leeks, onions, and garlic they had eaten in Egypt—even while living in bondage.
Friends, where does your affection lie? Is it fixed on this world’s temporary comforts, like the food the Israelites remembered, while forgetting that food is for the stomach and the stomach for food, and that both will one day pass away? Do you still look back fondly on your life in darkness or secretly long for an inglorious past? Or is your mind fixed on the I AM WHO I AM—the God who has brought you this far and has never said He would stop leading and guarding you?
Prayer
Heavenly Father, I pray that nothing will draw me back to longing for my inglorious past or cause me to dwell on it. Please help me keep my gaze fixed on You at all times, trusting in Your guidance and grace. In Jesus’s name, Amen.
