Numbers 9:16 NLT
“This was the regular pattern—at night the cloud that covered the Tabernacle had the appearance of fire.”
Evidence of God’s grace, not human effort
God has consistently shown His grace—an unearned love and mercy freely given to humanity. His graciousness was evident even in the wilderness, particularly to the people of Israel. For example, aside from building the Tabernacle, the Israelites did nothing to cause or influence the cloud covering it during its dedication. Scripture notes that “on the day the Tabernacle was set up, the cloud covered it,” indicating an immediate divine action. This cloud did not appear due to their rituals or sacrifices, nor were their actions a factor in its appearance. The Bible does not suggest that any particular behaviour by the Israelites made the Shekinah glory inevitable. It was not because of their holiness that the Shekinah descended, but because of God’s faithfulness and sovereign choice. The cloud symbolized God’s divine presence, manifesting as a visible sign of His glory, and its descent was solely a matter of God’s grace and purpose, not human effort.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, You continually extend unconditional love and mercy to all, a truth demonstrated most clearly when You sent Your Son, Jesus Christ, who willingly chose to sacrifice His life on the cross for the forgiveness of my sins. Please bestow upon me an abundance of Your grace. In Jesus’s name, Amen.
