Numbers 7:40 NLT
“and a male goat for a sin offering.”
For a sin offering
Did you know that burnt offerings and sin offerings were frequently performed together in the Old Testament, especially during religious festivals and at sacred sites such as the Tabernacle and later the Temple? If it weren’t the case, there wouldn’t have been the need for Moses to explicitly use the conjunction ‘and’ between the items brought for the burnt offering and sin offering, indicating their common association in ritual practice. The fact that items for the burnt offering were listed first does not imply that they held precedence; rather, in the Hebrew text, their order does not reflect chronological or spiritual priority. In the Old Testament, the sin offering was typically performed first to atone for specific sins, followed by the burnt offering, which symbolized total consecration to God. The lesson here is that being listed last does not alter the established spiritual hierarchy or precedence of offerings. Another insight is that Shemuliel brought the required animal, a male goat, to atone for his guilt, demonstrating personal accountability. Being a leader does not mean one is free of transgression; even high officials or elders need atonement. Just as followers seek forgiveness, leaders also require it, because scripture affirms, “For all have sinned and fallen short of God’s glory.” The word ‘all’ emphasizes that no one is exempt from the need for divine forgiveness and atonement.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, I humbly ask you to remember the precious blood of Jesus Christ, which was shed sacrificially on the cross at Calvary. Please atone for all my sins, both known and unknown, through His atoning sacrifice, and cleanse me from all unrighteousness. In Jesus’s name, Amen.
