On the first day
In every commencement ceremony I’ve attended, I’ve never been called to receive my diploma first—mainly because I don’t have the advantage of an alphabetical last name. Yet, I’ve always felt proud to be part of the graduating class. Knowing that my certificate holds the same value and validity as my peers’ made rushing to the front unnecessary. Similarly, there was no competition among the tribal leaders over who would go first; they understood that each would have their turn in its own time. More importantly, they recognized that the time one leader spends in God’s presence does not diminish another’s.
Interestingly, Moses didn’t need to pray about this; the people remembered how the Lord had organized their tribes according to divine instruction, as described in Numbers chapter 2. The scripture recounts that Nahshon, son of Amminadab and leader of the tribe of Judah, offered his sacrifice on the first day. His early start didn’t give him any special advantage or disadvantage. Going first doesn’t mean his offering is inherently better or worse—rather, the sequence was set by God’s divine plan, founded on fairness and order, without favouritism.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, please help me to genuinely value the specific position and responsibilities You have entrusted to me. Grant me the humility to never condescend to others, regardless of their status or the precedence associated with my role, and to treat everyone with respect and kindness. In Jesus’s name, Amen.
