Numbers 6:3 NLT
“they must give up wine and other alcoholic drinks. They must not use vinegar made from wine or from other alcoholic drinks, they must not drink fresh grape juice, and they must not eat grapes or raisins.”
Walking with God
Walking with God is not difficult because He provides a clear set of instructions for everyone to follow. These instructions do not change or expand based on the whims of those who adhere to them. God has not given anyone the authority to rewrite His instructions. He provided the Israelites with specific guidelines for the Nazarite vow. If someone follows these instructions, there should be no misunderstanding of their actions, as everyone knows the reasons behind them.
In essence, the Israelites did not have varying interpretations of the Nazarite vow, unlike many people today, who often rely on personal revelation—something the Lord did not provide for the people of Israel. The list of prohibitions was definitive when initially given by the Lord and has never changed. So why do we assume we can expand this list? The scripture highlights certain prohibitions, which are notably limited in number. The Lord instructed that anyone who undertakes this vow must refrain from wine, alcoholic drinks, vinegar, fresh grape juice, grapes, and raisins. It’s important to note that all other fruits were allowed, and consuming water was not prohibited.
However, if someone who has taken the vow chooses to exclude all fruits and limit their water intake, this could be interpreted as adopting a “holier-than-thou” attitude. You cannot follow Christ based on personal revelations that differ from what the Son of God revealed and what has been practiced by His apostles (Acts 2:42). Even though Saul, also known as Paul, wasn’t one of the twelve disciples, his teachings about Christ did not differ from those of Jesus’s earthly ministry (Galatians 2:7-9).
Friends, it’s important to understand that true consecration is not rooted in our fluctuating human emotions or personal interpretations; rather, it is grounded in the clear, timeless instructions God has laid out. These divine guidelines serve as a compass for our spiritual journey, ensuring that our actions align with His will. Therefore, let us be mindful not to add to the “do not do” list established by the King of Kings, as doing so can lead us away from the purity and clarity of His purpose for our lives. Let’s strive to remain faithful to His teachings and uphold the standards He has set for us.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, I humbly ask for Your guidance as I strive to follow Your teachings faithfully. Help me to receive Your instructions with an open heart and mind, avoiding the temptation to modify or expand upon Your divine will. Grant me the wisdom to understand that I cannot earn Your favour through my own efforts or by attempting to go beyond what You have laid out for me. Instead, let me find peace in the simplicity of obedience, trusting that Your requirements are perfect and sufficient for my spiritual journey. In Jesus’s name, Amen.
