Numbers 4:13 NLT
“They must remove the ashes from the altar for sacrifices and cover the altar with a purple cloth.”

Cover the altar
In the Old Testament, priests were responsible for tending to two altars every day: the golden altar of incense and the bronze altar of sacrifices. The operation of the golden altar was closely connected to the bronze altar; specifically, the coals from the bronze altar were essential for burning incense on the golden altar.

The golden altar of incense was located within the Holy Place of the Tabernacle, while the bronze altar of sacrifices was situated in the outer courtyard, highlighting its vital role in the sacrificial system. Interestingly, both altars had specific coverings commanded by God, though their colours were distinct. The bronze altar was to be draped with a purple cloth, symbolizing royalty and honour, even though it was never housed within the Holy Place of the Tabernacle. This choice of colour underscores God’s view of the altar as a significant and revered element of worship, reinforcing its importance in the covenant relationship between Him and His people.

Covering the altar signifies dignity and prevents it from retaining foreign matter during transport. Beloved, in your journey of life, it is essential to cover your own altar, that is, your heart, with the word of God. Guard it jealously, for out of it flows the issues of life.

Prayer
Heavenly Father, I humbly come before You, seeking the strength and wisdom to guard my heart with the truth of Your word diligently. Please help me create a protective barrier against any thoughts or desires that may lead to impurity. Please instill in me the discerning spirit to recognize any influences that threaten my spiritual well-being, so that I may remain steadfast in my faith and commitment to living a life that honours You. In Jesus’s name, Amen.
