Numbers 9:14 NLT
“And if foreigners living among you want to celebrate the Passover to the Lord, they must follow these same decrees and regulations. The same laws apply both to native-born Israelites and to the foreigners living among you.”
Absolutely no segregation—unity in action
When God divinely liberated the people of Israel from slavery in Egypt, the Scripture records that several foreigners accompanied and followed them (Exodus 12:38). Yet, God did not send these foreigners away but instead diligently cared for them, demonstrating His faithfulness. For example, when God parted the Red Sea, these foreigners crossed on dry ground just as the native-born Israelites did, indicating equal treatment in moments of divine intervention. Importantly, God did not explicitly or implicitly compel the foreigners to become His people. The scripture references the Lord saying “if the foreigners living among you,” rather than “when the foreigners living among you,” suggesting that participation in the Lord’s Passover was not obligatory for them. However, if foreigners chose to partake, they were subject to the same strict guidelines as native-born Israelites regarding Passover observance. Should the number of foreigners increase at a faster rate than native-born Israelites, the former cannot undo the Lord’s regulations for the Passover. Enforcing the same standards for both native-born and foreigners promotes unity, fairness, and harmony within the community. Friends, let us embrace this spirit of unity, knowing that God has not separated us by origin.
