Strong Tower: A Daily Scripture Reflection

Numbers 8:6 NLT
“Now set the Levites apart from the rest of the people of Israel and make them ceremonially clean.”

Now set the Levites apart
Every word in the scripture has a purpose. So having the word “now” start the referenced scripture was not accidental. God wanted Moses to treat the instruction that follows “now” with urgency. In other words, the task at hand couldn’t be postponed or carried out on Moses’s own timetable. Friends, do you handle God’s business in the way and at the time He expects, or do you tend to do it when it’s more convenient for you—perhaps when you’re less busy? Another lesson is that even though the Levites—comprising the Gershonites, Kohathites, and Merarites—were called to oversee different aspects of the Tabernacle’s work, we can infer from the scripture that they hadn’t yet been officially set apart from the rest of Israel for this service. Without this separation, their duties would have been unacceptable. The authority to set them apart was in Moses’s hands, but he could only proceed with God’s explicit approval. Friends, it’s always important to wait for God’s instructions before embarking on any project, regardless of how critical it seems. Lastly, we see that it was Moses’s responsibility to ensure the Levites’ ceremonial cleanliness. The lesson here is that Moses himself couldn’t have done this unless he was ceremonially clean. If he had lacked that purity, God wouldn’t have asked him to perform this duty for others. So, the question is: can God assign you a task that involves leading others in righteousness?

Prayer
Heavenly Father, I humbly ask for the strength and passion to embrace Your guidance with the urgency it deserves. In Jesus’s name, Amen.
