Numbers 5:7 NLT
“They must confess their sin and make full restitution for what they have done, adding an additional 20 percent and returning it to the person who was wronged.”
Justice with compassion
God does not permit wrongdoing among the people of Israel, encompassing all members of the community, not just the children of Israel. This principle serves as a reminder that being a child of God does not grant us the liberty to treat our fellow believers harshly. It extends even further to those who have not yet come to the knowledge of Jesus Christ as their Lord and Saviour, emphasizing the importance of compassion toward all individuals, regardless of their spiritual status.
In addition to the act of confession, which is the vital first step towards rectifying any wrongdoing, God requires a full restitution—along with an additional 20 percent—demonstrating a commitment to fairness and justice. This financial compensation should be directly related to the specific harm caused by the offender. It should not encompass every adverse experience the victim may have had before the incident. This stipulation reveals God’s intent to prevent individuals from shouldering burdens that far exceed their actions, reinforcing the notion of proportionality in accountability.
Thus, even in the context of punishment, God’s nature is clearly reflected—He desires to administer justice tempered with compassion and love. This approach ensures accountability without inflicting excessive suffering on those involved, thereby reaffirming His character as a just and merciful God.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, please help me understand that causing pain to others not only affects their hearts but also leads to significant repercussions that require deep healing and correction. I pray that the Holy Spirit empowers me in all my interactions so that I can communicate with kindness, demonstrate empathy, and make choices that promote understanding and love. In Jesus’s name, Amen.
