Numbers 5:7 NLT
“They must confess their sin and make full restitution for what they have done, adding an additional 20 percent and returning it to the person who was wronged.”

Confession is key
When the penalty for wrongdoing is merely a slap on the wrist, the likelihood of that behaviour recurring tends to be significantly high. This suggests that the frameworks God established for addressing wrongdoing among individuals were intentionally designed to deter anyone from engaging in nefarious acts from the outset. However, should someone choose to transgress, there remains hope for reconciliation with God. This entails a sincere confession, in which they must not gloss over the details but instead reveal accurate, non-public accounts of the harm they have caused.

So, to whom should this confession be directed? Primarily, it must be addressed to the aggrieved party. However, the most critical aggrieved party is God Himself. This is because the Lord perceives wrongdoing against another person not just as a breach of human trust but as an act of betrayal against Him. This understanding is underscored by King David’s admission, “Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight.” Similarly, Joseph resisted the advances of Potiphar’s wife, declaring, “How could I do such a wicked thing? It would be a great sin against God.”

Beloved, never hesitate to confess your sins to God, for scripture assures us, “But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness.” Beyond seeking forgiveness from God, it is equally vital to amend the relationship with the victim of one’s wrongdoing. James 5:16 notes that confessing to one another serves a vital purpose: it facilitates healing and closure for both parties. Engaging in this transparent process can transform not only the individual confessing but also restore the relationship, fostering an environment of genuine forgiveness and trust.

Prayer
Heavenly Father, I humbly ask that You open my eyes to recognize the wrongs I have committed, both seen and unseen. Grant me the strength and courage to confront these flaws honestly, rather than burying them under the carpet of denial or distraction. Help me to seek Your forgiveness intentionally and wholeheartedly, understanding the gravity of my actions and the importance of repentance in my journey toward spiritual growth. In Jesus’s name, Amen.
